Introduction of “Tai Ji Card”
The name of the first set of “I Ching Card” in the world was changed into “Tai Ji Card” in 2014. “Tai Ji Card” combines principles of yin and yang and art of playing chess together and initiates the promotion of Tai Ji culture in sports in both exercising and enlightening ways. The brief introduction is as follows:
I.The design of “Tai Ji Card” is based on the theory in Commentaries on Yi: “Tai Ji gives birth to two states. Two states are then developed into four images, and the four images give rise to eight trigrams.” One set has 68 cards in total including 64 standard cards and 4 trump cards.
(I) Card design: the middle of the standard cards are printed with diagrams, names and simple explanation of 64 divinatory symbols in I Ching. The angle codes are the Eight Trigrams’ diagram and name. The surrounding numbers are for distinguishing different cards. The card’s colors are sorted by the order of Tai Ji giving birth to the Eight Trigrams. The odd numbers are red and even numbers are black, which means one yang and one yin.
The center of the cards provide names of the 64 trigrams and the both ends are the diagrams of the trigram, the explanatory note is like antithetical couplet on the door. Take trigram Tai for example, the first line “heaven and earth merges into one” is trigram position, and the second line “atmosphere of prosperity” is trigram image, and the horizontal scroll “vigilant in peace time” is trigram principle. See the following figures for details:
The four trump cards are divided into our colors: red, black, blue and yellow which represents summer, winter, spring and autumn. The center of the card is a figure of dragon and phoenix fighting for Tai Ji which implies that the sports conception of combining yin and yang together. The angle code is the words of “Tai Ji Card”.
(II) Card order design: arrange by Eight Trigrams and according to the law of interaction of yin and yang. There are two orders: forward&backward and corresponding, namely the rules for following and showing cards.
Card order of forward&backward: qian (sky), dui (lake), li (fire), zhen (thunder), xun (wind), kan (water), gen (mountain) and kun (earth), the forward order is from qian to kun, and the backward order is from kun to qian.
Corresponding order: qian-kun, li-kan, dui-gen, zhen-xun, the cards can be followed with each other. The four trump cards are arranged from red, black, blue to yellow which is the order from big to small.
(III) Type design: that is type for showing cards. There are five card types: single row, pair cards, forward cards, trump cards and jokers.
(IV) Game rules: there are two types of rules: singles and doubles among four people. No matter it is singles or doubles, the one who first complete the Eight Trigrams Circulation is the winner.
“Tai Ji Card” is a recreational activity with Chinese cultural features. As it says: With elements in hand, with Yin-Yang in mind, play the game and decide the world, so Chinese wisdom is becoming a new wind.
